Nabis
   Taking their name from nabi, Hebrew for "prophet," the Nabis was a group of artists, formed in 1888 by paul sérusier and maurice denis, that met at the Julian Academy in Paris. It was composed of painters (Edouard vuillard, pierre bonnard, félix vallotton) and sculptors (aristide maillol). Their audacity, although measured, shocked the public of the era; they prefigured the extremes of the avant-gardes, especially the fauvists. in their work they rejected academicism, naturalism, and even impressionism and pointillism. Taught by sérusier and Denis, themselves influenced by paul gauguin and Vincent van Gogh and the Pont-Aven school, the Nabis reinterpreted surface with strokes of pure color, suppressed perspective, and rejected the necessity to give way to their feelings. Aspects of Japanese art were also incorporated. World War I (1914-18) broke the incentive and spirit of the group, and each one of them then evolved to a more personal style, while retaining, nonetheless, certain of the Nabis principles.
